This piece is for Lakshmi the goddess of wealth. I have been blessed in my life with an abundance of wonderful, life-giving teachers. It is my greatest wealth.
Lately, I have playing with multiple smaller canvases coming together like a jigsaw. This piece is three canvases, one 11" x 14" canvas, and twin 5" x 7" canvases. Fitting together canvases to make a complete image has been a bit of a fascination lately, perhaps because my own attention seem so disjointed lately.
I began painting this piece after I heard of the passing of Krishna Peter Perry. He is one teacher in the west who understands vedanta, samkhya, the actual spiritual heart of yoga. Krishna Peter Perry is that rarest of teachers. Learned, compassionate, and light-hearted, his guidance buoys me through many storms. His gentle way of coaxing me deeper into my own spirituality, and allowing myself to trust what I could not articulate in words is perfectly embodied in this lotus.
The lotus is the symbol of the goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and abundance. I tend to think of her a lot more as the goddess of karma, the one who sees your labor even one no one does. I have found that very comforting. Lakshmi sticks with you, she know what you are worth when no one else does or cares. The prosperity of that recognition, of being seen is often the greatest wealth one needs. Especially in this world of polarities.
I played with the contrast of purple and green to represent the lotus. In this piece, there are a few loving homages to Lakshmi, including her beej mantra. I hope wherever this piece goes, it brings an abundance of health and prosperity, and reminds you to see with love, through the eyes of the divine goddess.
